Mined diamonds, diamond-simulant
Cubic Zirconia, or man-made
diamonds
like Dazzelite,
which one is the favorite of gem-lovers? Don’t jump to the answer
that obviously the mined, real diamonds are the most desired
!Actually on the contrary, Many people avoid buying diamond not only
because of its exorbitant price, but also due to the horrible impact
its mining has on nature. Tonnes of rocks have to be turned over to
get a few carats of diamond.

Dazzelite,
Diamonds and Cubic Zirconia - a comparison
Let’s
compare the three varieties here:
Natural
diamond mined from earth is a carbon allotrope. In it, carbon atoms
are arranged in a specific manner. It has a hardness of Mohs 10.
Cubic
Zirconia (CZ) is the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide. It
is the Cheapest and Inferior version of Diamond
Simulant.CZ
is far less in hardness ( between 7-8 Mohs). The cost of CZ is few
rupees and it looses its color and luster when it gets exposed to
sunlight , water or usage of Hand Creams etc. Dispersion of CZ is
0.060 while that of Diamond is 0.044 . CZ is easily distinguishable
by a common eye.
To
compete with the diamond and its simulants, a new man-made
diamond called
Dazzelite
Solitaire
has recently appeared in jewel market. Dazzelite
is a silica carbide jewel.
Its properties are similar to diamond’s. Its hardness, 9.2–9.3,
is immensely close to that of diamond. But Dazzelite
costs just one-tenth of diamond.
It’
s difficult to distinguish a Dazzelite
from
a mined diamond. Dazzelite
vies with diamond in beauty and elegance and Dazzelite
lasts
forever.
